Vegetative characteristics

Aichryson villosum grows as an annual , simple or sparsely branched, densely hairy, herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 8 to 18 centimeters. The densely hairy, in the lower part sometimes bare shoots have a diameter of up to 4 millimeters. The lower branches are spreading widely and spread out. Their broad, pavement-shaped, blunt or rounded, densely hairy, often purple-tinged leaves are 12 to 24 millimeters long and 8 to 18 millimeters wide. They narrow into a distinct stalk about as long as the leaf blade quite suddenly . The leaf blade is widest near the base.

Generative characteristics

The loose inflorescence has few flowers . The seven to eight-fold flowers are on a 5 to 15 millimeter long peduncle and have a diameter of 12 to 15 millimeters. Their sepals are densely hairy. The deep yellow, lanceolate, pointed petals are 5 to 7 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Aichryson villosum is common in Santa Maria , Madeira , Ilhas Desertas and Porto Santo at altitudes of up to 1300 meters.

The first description as Sempervivum villosum by William Aiton was published in 1789. Philip Barker Webb and Sabin Berthelot put the species in the genus Aichryson in 1840 .

Another nomenclature synonym is Aichryson divaricatum var. Villosum (Aiton) Kuntze (1891).
