Frederick IV of Castell

Friedrich IV. Count and Lord of Castell (also Friedrich IX .; * Approx. 1435; † January 12, 1498 ) was ruler of the county of Castell from 1479 until his death .

After many rights and goods of the county of Castell had been lost in the 13th century, the counts ensured that the remaining possessions were re-established and acquired more rights in the 14th century. Wilhelm II, the father of Count Friedrich IV. Then sold the collected rights, as the county rapidly went into debt during his reign. The highlight was the handing over of the Grafschaft Castell as a fiefdom to Bishop Johann von Würzburg .

Life

Friedrich was born around the middle of the 15th century as the son of Wilhelm II zu Castell and his wife Anna von Helfenstein. The count was first mentioned in 1453. He was initially canon in Strasbourg, but after his brother Leonhard had a fatal accident while hunting, he returned to the secular status. After his death, his four sons took over the count's rule. Friedrich died in 1498 and was buried in the monastery church in Birklingen.

Marriage and offspring

Friedrich IV married Elisabeth von Reitzenstein in 1464. He had a total of ten children with her. Only four were fully mentioned in the sources because they took over the county's government.
