Friedrich Nieschlag (born May 7, 1901 in Bad Zwischenahn - Wehnen , † July 1, 1991 in Oldenburg ) was a German agricultural scientist . As director of the Agricultural Investigation and Research Institute in Oldenburg (after 1950 department of the Weser-Ems Chamber of Agriculture ) he had a lasting influence on the development of regional agriculture for over three decades.

Life

Friedrich Nieschlag attended grammar school in Oldenburg , then completed a three-year agricultural apprenticeship and studied agriculture in Hohenheim from 1923 . In 1926 he entered the service of the Agricultural Examination and Research Institute at the Oldenburg Chamber of Agriculture (later the Weser-Ems Chamber of Agriculture). At first he worked there as a research assistant. In 1933 he took over the soil investigation service as a department head and in 1938 he was appointed director of this institute. Here he worked until 1966.

Nieschlag initially dealt with questions of animal feeding , later mainly with problems of the soil nutrient balance , fertilization and all aspects of soil fertility . Through his scientific experiments, through inspiring lectures and through practical publications, he has had a lasting influence on the development of agriculture in northwest Germany, especially in the Weser-Ems region. Numerous farmers honored him with the title of "farmer professor". His versatile activities and the preoccupation with the current problems in agriculture made his name well known far beyond the borders of Lower Saxony. The most successful guides for farmers were his books The fertile soil (1961, 2nd edition 1969) and The fertilization in practice (1963).

From 1951 to 1966 Nieschlag was chairman of the Soil Fertility Section in the Association of German Agricultural Research and Research Institutes (VDLUFA). He earned merits through active activities in several committees of the German Agricultural Society , as chairman of the working group of soil specialists of the federal states and as a member of the working group for international endurance tests .

In recognition of his services to agriculture, Nieschlag was awarded the Max Eyth Medal in Silver and the Schultz Lupitz Medal by the German Agricultural Society . In 1978 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
