The son of the mining captain Claus Friedrich von Reden came from a family that was very close to mining. So he also studied the mountain subject and got his first job as Bergdrost in Clausthal in 1797. In 1803 von Reden was appointed Vice Mining Captain in Osnabrück and from 1817 he worked in the same position in Clausthal.

In 1825 he was appointed mining captain in Clausthal. In this position, von Reden made a contribution to the improvement of the technical facilities in the pits in the Upper Harz Mountains. Together with the Oberbergrat Julius Albert , von Reden commissioned the mountain jury Georg Ludwig Dörell in 1833 to try out a model of driving art constructed by the art boy Lichtenberg in the Spiegelthaler Hoffnungs-Richtschacht in practice. After the successful attempt, the driving skills were installed in all of the Upper Harz mines and a little later the Harz driving skills spread throughout Europe. In the following year Clausthal again became a center of technical progress when Albert invented the wire rope , which replaced the Harz chains that had been in use until then. His father had already had the first experiments with ropes made of drawn iron wire.

When von Reden died in 1836, Albert succeeded him as mining captain.

Friedrich Otto Burchard von Reden was a cousin of the Prussian chief miner and minister Friedrich Wilhelm von Reden .
