Georg Ludwig Dörell

Georg Ludwig Wilhelm Dörell (born December 17, 1793 in Clausthal , † October 30, 1854 in Zellerfeld ) was a German mountain master at the Zellerfeld mining office and inventor of the art of driving .

Life

Dörell was born on December 17, 1793, the son of Steigers Carl August Dörell (1752-1808) and his wife Auguste Eleonore Koch (born Kurtz, 1758-1828).

Dörell attended the Clausthal mountain school from 1812 and then worked in various pits in the Upper Harz mining industry . In 1815 he moved to the Bergakademie Freiberg and after completing his studies he became a juror in Katzhütte . From 1822 he became a driver in the Zellerfeld Revier .

In 1824 Dörell married Caroline Charlotte Louice Kathenbein . In 1827 his son Otto (1827–1902) was born.

With the rank of mountain jury member , Dörell is said to have observed in 1833 how the art boy Lichtenberg had hammered nails into the wooden rods of a piston pump for swamping in order to be able to change the working level more easily. Dörell was then commissioned by the mining captain von Reden and Bergrat Albert to have this idea of ​​driving art built in the Spiegelthaler Hoffnungsschacht as a test. This attempt was successful and Dörell has since been considered the inventor of the driving art, which soon revolutionized mining in Europe. Just a year later, Albert invented the wire rope , which made the handling of materials much easier.

In 1841 Dörell was appointed senior mountain jury member and seven years later mountain master at Zellerfeld.

Dörell died on October 30, 1854 at the age of 60 and was buried in the Zellerfeld cemetery.
