Friedrich Paul David Bürkli (* July 4, 1818 - October 20, 1896 ) was a Swiss printer and newspaper publisher .

Life

Friedrich Paul David Bürkli worked from 1837 on in the editorial department of the weekly newspaper Züricher Freitags-Zeitung , which had been in the Bürkli family for several generations since 1674. From 1852 to 1877 he was an independent editor of this newspaper. From the 1830s until his death in 1896, he published the Zurich calendar , which has been published annually since 1781 . Another title from his company were the travel companions for Switzerland , which included train and ship timetables, among other things.

Friedrich Bürkli was very politically active and participated as a publisher and editor on the conservative side in the political discussions in the city and canton of Zurich . He had been a member of the Swiss Zofingerverein since his student days . He was also interested in history and from 1851 on was a member of the Zurich Antiquarian Book Society , whose actuary he was from 1856 to 1866. He later joined the Museum Society of Zurich , for which he managed the society library from 1880 to 1893. He expressed great interest in the history and culture of the Orient , which resulted in a lively collection of oriental books and brochures and resulted in a comprehensive collection. Luise Amberger-Schinz, niece and heiress of Friedrich Bürklis, donated the aforementioned oriental library to the Zurich City Library in 1897. Today it is part of the holdings of the Zurich Central Library , united under the signature ZR.

Friedrich Bürkli's collection includes around 1500 titles. About half of it is orientalist specialist literature from the 19th century, the other half to prints from Europe , Egypt and India , mostly in Arabic . The works are by Arabic authors from the 6th to 16th centuries and cover the areas of grammar , lexicology , Islamic law , Islamic theology , literature and history .
