Friedrich Schaper (born November 13, 1869 in Braunschweig , † February 21, 1956 in Hamburg ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Friedrich Schaper came to Hamburg with his parents when he was four . From 1886 he trained as a decorative painter there. From 1889 he studied at the arts and crafts school in Hamburg, but in 1890 he switched to the art academy in Berlin .

At the urging of his mentor Alfred Lichtwark , he returned to Hamburg in 1894. Together with seven other young painters, he founded the Hamburg Art Club in the spring of 1897 . After a few years as a freelance painter, he worked as a drawing teacher from 1902. In 1903 he married Camilla Lobenstein and settled in Groß-Borstel. Friedrich Schaper was a member of the German Association of Artists . He was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .

From 1925 on, Schaper worked as a teacher at the state art school . After the end of the war he was appointed professor in 1949.

The Professional Association of Visual Artists Hamburg awarded Schaper honorary membership in 1949. A year later he could no longer pursue painting due to an eye problem. In 1951 he became an honorary member of the Hamburg Art Association . He died in 1956 in the Hamburg district of Groß Borstel . In the same year the Hamburger Kunsthalle acquired two self-portraits by Schaper from 1894 and 1949.

Friedrich Schaper was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery, but his tombstone can no longer be found.
