Friedrich Stahl (born December 27, 1863 in Munich , † July 12, 1940 in Rome ) was a German painter and illustrator of naturalism and German impressionism .

Life

From 1878 Stahl studied at the Munich Academy as a student of Wilhelm Diez , Ludwig von Löfftz and Gyula Benczúr . At the age of 21 he moved into his own studio. From 1886 to 1898 he lived in Berlin, illustrated for the gazebo and was there in 1892 co-founder of the opposition artist group Vereinigung der XI . In the following years he lived for some time in England to study the Pre-Raphaelites , and from 1904 to 1913 in Florence, where he was engaged in painting from the early Italian Renaissance (including Sandro Botticelli ). In 1914 he returned to Munich and then lived in Rome. In 1907 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Stahl was a member of the Society of German Watercolor Artists (honorary diploma from the Dresden Watercolor Academy) and the Munich Secession . He began his career as a genre painter with Impressionist motifs ("Beach Promenade" or "The Rendezvous") and developed his own characteristic individual style, which was influenced by the Quattrocentists and English Pre-Raphaelites , based on Impressionism . Stahl experienced great recognition within the National Socialist conception of art ; In 1939 he was honored with a special exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Berlin and in the same year became a member of the German Art Society. In 1940 it was presented at the " Great German Art Exhibition ".
