Friedrich Wilhelm Nottebohm

Friedrich Wilhelm Nottebohm (born April 10, 1808 in Wattenscheid , † October 18, 1875 in Berlin ) was a German architect , engineer and industrialist.

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Nottebohm was the son of the mechanic George Wilhelm Nottebohm (1778-1852). He attended elementary school in Wattenscheid until 1821 and trained in his father's workshop. In 1821 he went to the high school in Bochum and began in 1823 as a Baueleve with Bochum's master road builder Wilhelm Dieckhof. From 1829 he did an apprenticeship as a surveyor and took the exam in 1834. This was followed by studies at the General Building School in Berlin, which he completed with the pre-examination for land and road builder. He then attended the Berlin Industrial Institute , where he was a student of Peter Beuth . In 1837 Beuth traveled through the Rhine Province and Westphalia on behalf of Beuth to study factory and ironworks as well as steam engine technology. In 1840 he passed the examination to become a land and hydraulic engineering inspector with distinction. He specialized in railways, telegraphy and industrial policy and made trips to the West Prussian provinces, England and France. In 1842 he became an assessor in the deputation for the trade and member of the management of the Berlin-Anhalt Railway . In 1848 he got his first regular job as a government and building officer for the Prussian railway. In 1849 he became a technical member of the Royal Telegraph Directorate and from 1850 to 1856 its head. In this role he built the first efficient above and below ground telegraph network and introduced the Morse telegraph in Prussia. He played a major role in the founding of the German-Austrian Telegraph Association , the first effective step towards the internationalization of telegraph traffic. In 1856 he moved to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Building with his appointment as a secret senior building officer and lecturer, and was also director of the business institute from 1856 to 1867 (from 1866 business academy). From 1868 he was head of commercial education in the Ministry of Commerce.
