Andrena labiata is a solitary sand bee from the Andrenidae family. It is a solitary, nest-building bee that has one generation a year and flies in May and June. In German it is sometimes called the "Rote Ehrenpreis-Sandbiene".

features

The females are about 10 to 12 mm long. The body is mostly black, but red on the second and third tergite. There is a black point on the side of the second tergite. The hair is predominantly white, and brownish on the thorax. End fringe brownish, rail brush dark brown above and white below.

The males are slightly smaller, 7 to 9 mm long. Color of the body as in females, clypeus whitish, next to it light spots, forehead and parting hairy yellow-brown.

There are several similar sand bees, for example A. marginata , A. potentillae , A. florea and A. hattorfiana . Special literature is required for an exact determination.

distribution and habitat

Widespread in practically all of Europe, east to Central Asia and Western Siberia. Widespread in Germany, only rare in the north German lowlands.

A. labiata can be found on dry meadows, grasslands, orchards, on field and forest fringes and on flood dams. The species is also found sporadically in gardens and parks. It lives from the flatlands to subalpine altitudes.

Way of life

The species nests solitary and digs nests in the earth on bare or sparsely vegetated areas. No preference for certain types of soil can be seen. The bees mostly nest individually, but sometimes also in aggregations. The overwintering takes place in the nest as an imago. The females collect pollen from different plants, so they are polylectic. The females are often found on Veronica chamaedrys and cinquefoil .

Parasites

The cuckoo bee Nomada guttulata parasitizes in the nests of A. labiata . Adult animals are sometimes infested with fan-winged animals .
