The bryony sand bee ( Andrena florea ) is a solitary wild bee from the genus of sand bees . She was the wild bee of the year 2015.
features
The animals show weak sexual dimorphism, which is rather unusual for bees. At 11–12 mm, they are slightly smaller than honey bees . Their stature appears relatively slim, especially that of the males. Their hair is generally light brown, sparse on the abdomen with weakly pronounced bands on the tergith posterior margins. The legs are dark, the scopae and, to a lesser extent, the hair on the hind legs of the males are two-colored, and light on the ventral side. A striking feature is the reddish drawing of the abdomen. This can be found on the first three segments. The extent of the drawing is variable.

Occurrence
The species is widespread in the western Palearctic. Their occurrences range from Morocco to Iran and from England to the southern Urals. The presence of this species is linked to the presence of bryams . Accordingly, they like to inhabit forest edges, ruderal areas and also parks and gardens. In Germany, the species was previously restricted to the southern half. However, this has changed in recent years. The bees have spread to northern Germany.
Way of life
The bryony sand bee is univolted and flies from May to August during the flowering period of the bryan bees. It is strictly oligolectic and only gathers provisions for its brood from bryams . It creates its nests in the ground. Sparsely vegetated areas are preferred. The bees like to be sociable. In suitable places, aggregations of hundreds of nests can arise.
