Joachim Pfannschmidt (born December 13, 1960 in Bremen ) is a German surgeon and adjunct professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He is the chief physician of the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic at the Helios Clinic Emil von Behring in Berlin.

Life

Pfannschmidt studied human medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster with study visits to the University of Oxford , Harvard Medical School, Boston and the University of London with a dissertation in 1989. From 1989 to 1992 he was an intern, assistant doctor and research assistant in the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at the University of Cologne. In 1992 Pfannschmidt moved to the ZKH Reinkenheide / Bremerhaven , where he was initially an assistant doctor in the clinic for visceral, thoracic and vascular surgery as well as in the clinic for trauma, hand and plastic surgery and from 1995 to 1999 as a senior physician in the clinic for visceral -, thoracic and vascular surgery. He was recognized as a specialist in surgery in 1996 and the focus on thoracic surgery in 1999. After his time in Bremerhaven, Pfannschmidt went to the thoracic clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital, initially as an assistant doctor (1999-2000), then as a senior physician in the surgery department. In 2003 he took up the position of senior physician at the Thorax Clinic in Heidelberg, which he held until 2013. In 2006 he completed his habilitation in surgery at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, and in 2010 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Heidelberg. Pfannschmidt has been chief physician at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic at the Helios Clinic Emil von Behring since 2013 .

Scientific contribution

Pfannschmidt worked with a working group in the Translational Research Section at the Thorax Clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital to develop scientific focal points on the problem of the surgical treatment of limited metastasis, both for lung cancer and for extrapulmonary tumors. In addition to a large number of studies that dealt with the characterization of clinical prognostic parameters for the treatment of patients with lung metastasis of extrathoracic primary tumors, research was carried out in cooperation with the Department of Functional Genome Analysis at the German Cancer Research Center on the molecular biological analysis of tissue samples in the case of oligometastasis using Affymetrix gene expression analyzes. This was followed by further projects with working groups from the Surgery Clinics at the Universities of Heidelberg and Dresden to investigate tumor invasion and metastasis by analyzing specific microRNA expression profiles. The clinically relevant question of thoracic lymph node dissection in the context of lung metastasis surgery was repeatedly examined and analyzed for different primary tumors. In cooperation with the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of the Thorax Clinic at the University Hospital Heidelberg and the Departments for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the HELIOS Clinic Emil von Behring, analyzes were carried out with regard to the classification of different diagnostic methods in the preoperative diagnosis of olígo and lung metastases. The importance of preoperative computed tomography and PET / CT examinations was assessed. Further work on lung metastasis was carried out with the Landspítali University Hospital, Reykjavik, among others, as well as on the surgical problems in the treatment of lung carcinoma and especially the Pancoast tumor , with extended chest wall interventions in an interdisciplinary concept and with diseases of the thymus organ .

Pfannschmidt's surgical focus is on operations on the lungs and the median membrane, in particular in lung cancer and lung metastasis.

Memberships in scientific associations

Pfannschmidt is a member of various national and international scientific associations such as "The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA)", "German Society for Surgery" and "German Society for Thoracic Surgery". He is also the guideline officer of the "German Society for Thoracic Surgery (DGT)" in the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) and works in various guideline development groups. a. the S3 guideline for lung carcinoma and the S3 guideline for renal cell carcinoma.
