The Knautien sand bee ( Andrena hattorfiana ) is a sand bee from the Andrenidae family .

features

This sand bee becomes 13 to 16 millimeters long. The females, just like females of other species from the same genus, have very hairy hind legs and a hip lock (floccus) made of curved hair on the hind leg. The rest of the body is dark with sparse light hair. The second, and sometimes the first, segment of the back of the body is red. There are also completely black copies. The males are slimmer and have thicker hair, especially in the middle. The red coloring of the rear body is less common in males.

Spread and endangerment

The Knautien sand bee is found in large parts of Europe and North Africa . In some areas the species has disappeared due to overfertilization and the use of weed control agents . In Germany , Great Britain , Finland , Norway and Sweden the species was added to the national Red List of Endangered Species .

Way of life

This sand bee lives solitary and does not form colonies. The females create nests in the soil, in the cells of which the eggs are laid. Knautia sand bees mate from mid-June to mid-August. In terms of food, this species specializes in pollen from the field scabious ( Knautia arvensis ) and the pigeon scabies ( Scabiosa columbaria ), which is why this sand bee only occurs in areas where these plants grow, i.e. in meadows and on the edges of fields and forests . The pollen is stored in the cells of the nest as food for the larvae.

Wild bee of the year 2017

The Knautien sand bee was chosen by the Wild Bee Cadastre Working Group as Wild Bee of the Year 2017.
