Friends of the Earth Australia

The Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA), founded in 1974, is a non-profit organization , the Australian member of the overarching organization Friends of the Earth is. Only one organization from each country can be a member, in Germany this is the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany . The Australian organization with offices in Melbourne (Collingwood) has around 4,000 members and is committed to environmental and nature protection and the related social, political and human rights.

The society is in the left and green political spectrum of Australia. It has structures of grassroots movement and cooperates with other groups. FoEA works on the basis of scientific findings and studies, with the use of the media, representation of interests, peaceful actions and also with lawsuits in courts.

The association initiates and participates in numerous campaigns for the sustainable preservation of nature and the environment.

The FoEA is active against global warming and in 2009 developed a campaign against the expansion of coal mining and export. She participates in initiatives against Australian nuclear policy and is an important part of the anti-nuclear power movement in Australia , she is against uranium mining in Australia , the operation of the uranium mine at Olympic Dam and the storage of nuclear waste in the Northern Territory . FoEA works in the Secretariat of the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (ANFA).

The FoEA advocates a moratorium on the research, development and production of nanotechnology until regulations regarding the health and safety of workers, the population and the environment have been developed. The FoEA advocates the use of chemical toxins, in particular bisphenol A in consumer production, the use of pesticides in drinking water catchment areas and sustainable agricultural and food production.

Local groups

Numerous local FoEA groups are in partnership with Aboriginal communities .

The association has also been running a center for the recovery of industrial waste in Brisbane since 1999 to educate and motivate communities about the use of this technology, and also promotes the use of bicycles as a means of transport. FoEA in Melbourne operates a food cooperative, a bookstore and, since January 2011, a café.

financing

The local groups are self-financing. National campaigns are fought through individual donations, foundations, trade results and legacies. FoE Australia does not currently (2011) receive any funding from the government or its affiliated cooperations.
