Requirements are generally friendliness, good appearance, in particular a well-groomed appearance and fashion awareness, as well as manual dexterity and dexterity, a basic design ability, as well as contact skills, language skills and independence in looking after customers. In addition, a certain insensitivity of the skin is a prerequisite, as one comes into contact with numerous chemical preparations (exposure to skin-damaging substances). Another inconvenience is constant standing.

A related apprenticeship is beautician (2-year apprenticeship, without a replacement for the final apprenticeship exam).

education

The apprenticeship period is 3 years.

In addition to general vocational training, the training includes relevant goods science (with basic knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and color theory) including basic medical knowledge of hair, skin and nails and their cleaning, tool knowledge (handling, maintenance, storage, disinfection), and all relevant safety regulations , as well as advice and sales talks, in particular color and style advice . The practical training then includes hair washing , head massage , hair cutting , hairstyling , hair coloring (including eyebrow and eyelash coloring ), shaving and beard care , nail care , basic knowledge of make-up , as well as making, cleaning, caring for and styling wigs and hair replacement parts (toupees) as well as that Tie-in hair (extensions and the like, hair lengthening and thickening).

An essential factor of the profession is constant professional training, for example for new fashion trends and techniques. There are numerous additional training courses (such as body and beauty care and outfit, fashion, style advice e.g. WIFI, bfi and various other providers), in particular that of a master hairdresser ( master's examination ), with the possibility of becoming a managing director or self-employed. A subsequent specialization in the sub-trade modeling of fingernails (nail studio, fingernail designer ) is also possible. Make-up art in the narrower sense is covered, but requires additional training for activities in theater and film.

There are relevant vocational schools in all federal states.

The training time and the volume of training and further training are regulated by the training regulations mentioned in Section 7 of the Vocational Training Act. This was recently redesigned (2014).

In the 2015/16 school year, a higher education institution for hairstyling, make-up and make-up art will start at the Hallein Fashion School (HBLA), the first such school type in Austria.

independence

Hairdresser and wig maker (stylist) is a craft occupation and a regulated trade , which means that a certificate of competence must be provided for the trade registration .

Professional representation is the federal guild of hairdressers.

labour market

The average starting salary is around € 1,480–1640 gross per month (collective agreement, as of 2015). The apprentices currently receive at least € 353 per month in the first, € 449 in the second and € 619 in the third year.

Although this apprenticeship is basically equally open to women and men, it is considered a “typical female profession”. In 2009, 70% of all female apprentices chose one of only 10 professions, and hairdresser was the third most popular with a share of 12% (after retail saleswoman  24%, office clerk  12.5%). This limited career choice in rather poorly paid jobs contributes significantly to the gender pay gap.
