Fritz Hüser Institute
The Fritz Hüser Institute for the Literature and Culture of the Working World in Dortmund emerged from a private collection established in 1923 by the steel worker and later librarian Fritz Hüser . In 1973, Hüser, who has been the director of Dortmund's city libraries since 1945, donated this private collection to the city of Dortmund, which in return set up a scientific institute. Since then, the collection has been expanded considerably and also takes current literary developments into account. The core components today are a special library comprising around 50,000 volumes, an archive with the estates of writers, publicists and literary associations, as well as various collections (including photos, audio-visual media, posters, works of art, newspaper clippings).

The collection areas cover all areas of the literary and cultural history of the world of work: literature, music, theater, art, sports, Esperanto, the vagabond movement and others.

An old archive with compositions and song manuscripts was taken over from the former German Workers' Association , today the » German General Singers Association «. There are also smaller manuscript holdings by 170 authors, including Martin Andersen Nexø , Bertolt Brecht , Oskar Maria Graf , Hermann Hesse , Sinclair Lewis , Erich Mühsam , Ernst Toller , B. Traven , Josef Winckler , Friedrich Wolf , Stefan Zweig and Gerhard Baron , Josef Luitpold Stern and Alfons Petzold . The image archive includes graphics, photographs and posters on all areas of literature in the world of work. In 2009 the Willi Bredel library was given to the Fritz Hüser Institute on permanent loan by the Willi Bredel Society .

The main research interests are the history of the literature of the world of work. The results of the research work are published in the series of publications of the Fritz-Hüser-Institut . The last conference took place in 2012.
Fritz Hüser Society
The Fritz Hüser Society e. V. is the sponsoring company of the Fritz Hüser Institute for literature and culture in the world of work. The society has around 100 members and supports the work of the institute through publications and events.
