education and profession

After successfully completing the Königsländer Schule in Hinschenfelde , which belongs to the Hamburg district of Wandsbek , Bauer attended the Hamburg commercial school . He then completed a commercial apprenticeship in order to initially work for a ship broker before finally switching to the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) as an employee . After advancing to the position of head of the Wandsbeker branch, Bauer was finally appointed director of the AOK headquarters in Hamburg in the early 1960s and managed it until he retired in 1975.

Sports official

In 1928 Bauer joined the workers' sports club FTSV Wandsbek from 1881, which had emerged from the Wandsbeker men's gymnastics club from 1872 , and was chairman there as early as 1932. He also joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany . In this function he witnessed the destruction of his club by the National Socialists after the seizure of power in 1933 and had to liquidate the club a year later. After the end of the war and his return from captivity, Bauer rebuilt the club in 1949 and was again chairman until 1953. In 1962 he became chairman of the Hamburg Sports Association and as such from 1966 also a member of the newly established sports advisory board of the Hamburg Interior Authority . He was particularly committed to the social aspects of sport and promoted popular sport . In 1981 Bauer did not resume as chairman; Friedel Gütt was his successor . Instead, Bauer was elected honorary president. In 1989, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Hamburger Sportbund donated an annual prize for services to popular sport, the "Fritz Bauer Prize".
