Fritz Behrend (geologist)

Fritz Carl Joachim Behrend (born June 24, 1885 in Berlin ; † November 25, 1949 ) was a German geologist and university professor . He was a private lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

He was born on June 24, 1885 as the son of the City Secretary Carl Behrend and his wife Bertha Muchow in Berlin. Fritz Behrend also attended Sophien-Gymnasium there until he passed his final exams . During this time he was already interested in geology and the secrets of the earth's history. He began studying geology at the University of Berlin and then switched to the local mining academy. From January 1909 to June 1913 he went on a study trip of several years to East Africa and the Belgian Congo. After his return he became an assessor at the Bergakademie in Berlin. After the outbreak of World War I he was called up for military service.

After the war he became a district geologist at the Prussian State Geological Institute . After completing his doctorate, he completed his habilitation in 1924 in the field of general geology. After he stayed in South Africa from 1928 to 1929, he worked as a private lecturer at Berlin University. The assumption of the chair for geology at the Free University of Berlin was no longer possible due to his death.

family

Fritz Behrend was married to Hedwig nee Lange. Their son Karl Behrend (* 1922) emerged from their marriage.
