Fritz Henle

Fritz Henle (born June 9, 1909 in Dortmund ; died January 31, 1993 in San Juan (Puerto Rico) ) was a German-American freelance photographer. His predilection for Rolleiflex cameras earned him the nickname “Mr. Rollei ”.

Life

Fritz Henle was a son of the surgeon Adolf Henle and the grandson of Jakob Henle . His siblings Annemarie Henle Pope and Werner Henle also had to flee Germany from racist persecution. Henle began self-taught photography in the 1920s, attended the Bavarian State College for Photography from 1930 to 1931, and traveled to Japan, China and India from 1934 to 1936 as a commercial photographer for the Lloyd Triestino shipping company . In 1936 he emigrated to the USA and lived in New York until 1948. He received American citizenship in 1942. Until the end of World War II, Henle worked for various American magazines such asLife , for which he created five cover photos, Mademoiselle , Holiday , Fortune and Harper's Bazaar , and also worked for the United States Office of War Information .

Since 1948 Henle lived on Saint Croix , the largest of the American Virgin Islands , and published numerous illustrated books, most of which were devoted to topics from the Caribbean . He died of heart failure on January 31, 1993 in San Juan, Puerto Rico .

In addition to his work for numerous US magazines, Henle has created over 20 illustrated books of travel photography . In the field of amateur photography , his book Fritz Henle's Guide to Rollei Photography from 1956 should be mentioned. The photography historian Helmut Gernsheim described Henle as the “last classic freelance photographer”.
