Fritz Horn (engineer)

Fritz Horn (born October 9, 1880 in Elbing ; † January 11, 1972 in Berlin ) was a German shipbuilding engineer and professor .

education

Horn had studied shipbuilding at the Berlin Technical University (TH) after graduating from high school . He passed his diploma in 1903 with distinction. With his dissertation, presented in 1910, “The dynamic effects of wave motion on the longitudinal loading of the hull” , he was one of the first doctoral engineers in shipbuilding. In 1912 he completed his habilitation at the TH Danzig in the field of ship vibrations.

Industrial activity

From 1903 to 1925 he devoted himself to a longer activity in the design office of the Germania shipyard in Kiel, as head of submarine design at the Imperial Shipyard in Gdansk and in the scientific department of the German shipyard in Hamburg. His work as successor to Karl Schaffran led him back to Berlin from 1925, where he headed the shipbuilding department of the Prussian Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Shipbuilding .

University activity

As the successor to Oswald Flamm , the professor emeritus of the chair for "Theory and Design of Ships", who retired in 1927, Horn accepted the call to the TH in 1928 for the chair for Theory of Ships , which had been newly created through separation. Here Horn continued his fundamental research in many branches of ship theory and built up an exemplary system-building teaching in his subject. In many lectures and publications, he presented his research results in ship theory to the professional world.

For complex physical phenomena, Horn often had simple, argumentatively well-substantiated, theoretical explanations. Many questions of ship theory, which Euler had already raised and dealt with with the resources of his time, found a final, physically secure answer in this phase with the help of modern knowledge and methods. Horn's contributions to this development have also received high international recognition in the science and practice of shipbuilding. In 1950 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Karlsruhe for his scientific merits. Horn retired in 1952, but headed the research institute for hydraulic engineering and shipbuilding until 1953.
