Fritz Nies

Friedrich "Fritz" Nies (born February 13, 1934 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a professor emeritus for Romance literature at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and an internationally recognized Romance studies .

Nies has made a special contribution to the international exchange of culture and science and the cooperation between universities and cultural institutes . He is particularly interested in promoting foreign and foreign studies and promoting Franco-German relations .

Professional career

Fritz Nies studied Romance and German at the universities of Heidelberg , Dijon and Paris . In 1961 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg, where he also completed his habilitation in 1969 .

From 1960 to 1970 he initially worked as a German lecturer in Rennes and then as an academic advisor at the Romance seminar in Heidelberg.

In the 1970/71 winter semester he was appointed full professor for Romance literature at the University of Düsseldorf, to which he remained until his retirement in 1999.

From 1980 to 1984 he chaired the Linguistics and Literature Committee of the German Research Foundation . In 1983 he was elected chairman of the German Association of Romanists . During his four-year term in office, he succeeded in raising the profile of the association in all areas of science policy and in consolidating contacts with the diplomatic missions of the Romansh-speaking countries.

He has received invitations to professorships in Aix, Paris-Nanterre, University of California (Davis), Nantes, at the École normal supérieure Paris and at the Collège de France . The partnership that the University of Düsseldorf entered into with the University of Nantes in 1973 was largely based on his initiative.

Nies was a member of numerous commissions at his university and worked as an organizer of conferences and exhibitions on the transfer of culture and knowledge between France and Germany. Until 2013 he was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board at the France Center in Freiburg.

The diploma course in literary translation at the University of Düsseldorf, which was set up in 1988 and is unique in Europe, can also be attributed to his commitment. The same applies to the foundation of the DVA Translator Prize and the Paul Celan Prize of the German Literature Fund.

Honors
