Fritz Schmücker

Fritz Schmücker (* 1961 in Dorsten ) is a German music organizer and the artistic director of the Münster International Jazz Festival .

Life

Schmücker founded what was then the Dorsten jazz club as a student at the Petrinum Dorsten grammar school . He studied sociology, Eastern European history and educational science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University . His thesis in sociology from 1990 is an empirical study of the recipients of jazz music and was published by Lit Verlag . Schmücker examined the concert audience of contemporary jazz in terms of age, education, occupation, aesthetic, political and social attitudes and compared his results with the previous and up to then only study from 1976. In 1992 he obtained a master's degree in sociology. Fritz Schmücker has been artistic director of the Münster International Jazz Festival, founded in 1979, since 1985.

In 1984 Fritz Schmücker, at that time AStA cultural advisor in Münster , and Hartmut Schmitz from the Jazzclub Münster e. V. met. In a team with Frank Schraven, the organizer of the first Münster jazz festivals, and Rainer Holtmann from the AStA cultural department, they took on the planning for the 7th Münster International Jazz Festival in 1985. The following festival editions until 1999 were artistically in the hands of the duo Fritz Schmücker and Hartmut Schmitz . Schmücker was also the initiator and coordinator of the city's 1200th anniversary in 1993, the year of peace in 1998, the 350th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia and the event “Off to the Middle”. Since 1994 he has been a member of the jury for the Westfalen Jazz Prize.

Since 2000 Schmücker has been the sole artistic director of the Münster International Jazz Festival. He is also the artistic director of “Jazz Inbetween”, which has been held annually since 2004, alternating with the International Jazz Festival.

Since December 2001 Schmücker has headed the event and city management division in Münster and has been deputy head of Münster Marketing since 2008 .
