Fritz Schmidt (born December 1, 1919 ; † unknown) is a former German football player. In 1949 he played for the BSG KWU Erfurt in the highest East German soccer league ( DS League ).

Athletic career

After the end of the Second World War , Fritz Schmidt joined the SG Erfurt-West , with whom he reached the semifinals of the Thuringian soccer championship in 1948 . At the beginning of 1949 the team was renamed SG Fortuna Erfurt and became Thuringian champions with Fritz Schmidt. Fortuna was thus eligible to start the East Zone Championship in 1949 . In the quarter-finals (10: 0 over SG Wismar-Süd ) Fritz Schmidt scored four goals, in the semifinals (4: 3 afterwards over SG Meerane ) he took the 3-2 lead in regular time. In the final, Erfurt had no chance against ZSG Union Halle and lost 1: 4. Fritz Schmidt scored the Erfurt consolation goal in the 77th minute.

As a runner-up, the Erfurt team qualified for the East German Football Zone League , which from 1949/50 would determine the East German football champions. At the beginning of the season, the Erfurter SG had transformed into the company sports community (BSG) KWU and nominated 29-year-old Fritz Schmidt for the league squad. However, this was only used on the eighth and ninth game day and then no longer appeared in higher-class football.
