history

The Froschloch open-air swimming pool was built in 1927 and is one of the oldest open-air swimming pools in Dortmund. The pool originally had a 50 meter lane, an attached non-swimmer pool and a three meter diving tower . In the 1980s, a tennis court and paddling pool were built for toddlers.

Due to the dilapidated building and pool fabric, the pool had to be closed in 2005; in May 2007, the city of Dortmund made 1.6 million euros available for the renovation of the open-air pool and its conversion to Dortmund's first natural pool . From late summer 2008, the pool, the technical pool water treatment (filter, disinfection, pool hydraulics) and the open spaces were renewed or rebuilt. The sanitary facilities and the gastronomic areas were also renewed.

The reopening of the Froschloch was planned for the summer season 2009, but was delayed due to the consequences of the severe flooding in Dortmund in 2008 and due to defects in the construction, only an open day could be held in September 2009.

Attractions

The swimming pool now has four 25 m lanes and a separate non-swimmer area. An artificial sandy beach was created on the arched shallow water side of the non-swimmer's pool. A second new non-swimmer pool was built with a slight difference in height; the lower area can be reached via a slide. A sprinkler field , play stream and a flat paddling area for small children have also been set up.

Water treatment

The water treatment of the natural outdoor pool is based on purely mechanical and biochemical mechanisms, so that chemical disinfection is not necessary. In the Froschloch a 1,200 m² Neptun filter is used, which consists of fine grit and is sprinkled with the bath water. The functional principle is comparable to trickling filters that are used in sewage treatment plants .

Villa Froschloch

Right next to the outdoor pool is the listed Villa Froschloch , built in 1926 , which is used as a guest house and as a course and educational facility for the City Sports Association.
