Foot pilgrimage Werne – Werl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The foot pilgrimage Werne – Werl is part of the religious tradition of the Catholics in Werne an der Lippe . The pilgrimage leads from Werne to the miraculous image of the Blessed Mother of the pilgrimage basilica Werl and takes place annually in the first or last week of the summer holidays from Friday to Sunday.

About 220 pilgrims take part on the way there and about 140 pilgrims on the way back . The pilgrimage from Werne to Werl is one of the oldest pilgrimages in Werl and has been around since 1677.

History of the pilgrimage

The Capuchin Fathers in Werne gave the first suggestion for a common foot pilgrimage from Werne to Werl, where their confreres looked after the miraculous image. So in 1677 Werner Bürger moved for the first time on arduous field and forest paths to the Mother of Grace in Werl. The procession took place every year around the Visitation of the Virgin Mary . Old field names in the neighboring communities still indicate the path that the Werner procession made. In Osterbönen, for example, a path that Werner pilgrims walked for 275 years is still called the “Hilgenweg”.
