Fuafatu

Fuafatu is a reef island in the reef fringes of the Atoll Funafuti , Tuvalu , about 9 km north of Tefala .

geography

The island forms the westernmost tip of the atoll. It has roughly the shape of a "6". It is located in the Funafuti Conservation Area , which was founded in 1996 with the aim of preserving the local nature.

To the west is the Te Akau Fuafatu reef and there is an anchorage between the reef and the island. The Te Ava Fuagea Canal ( , also: Ava Amelia, Fuagea Deep Pass) runs about three kilometers to the southeast . The deep and narrow passage is up to 18.3 m deep and 160 m wide and forms the clearest separation from the southern part of the atoll . Another, shallower passage between this mark and the island is Te Ava Papa ( ) and to the northeast, the passage Te Ava Kumkum ( , also: Kumkum Minor Pass) with the islet of Fualopa separates the area from the rest of the reef. The closest island to the southeast is Vasafua .
