Fuck the System is the eighth studio album by the Scottish punk band The Exploited . It was released in 2003 around seven years after the previous album. For the version released by Spitfire Records in the USA , the name of the album was changed to "F ** k the System", and the track names were also changed accordingly.

background

The band found themselves under great pressure in songwriting because they were not trusted to repeat the success of their predecessor "Beat The Bastards". There were therefore over 60 pieces to choose from before the recordings. The studio recordings also took a long time because band leader Wattie Buchan was not satisfied with any recording:

“Stupidly, I always had problems with my voice. Or I wasn't in the right mood for the song in question. We also changed studios a few times. We're so damn proud of our last three albums that everything has to be perfect. "

- Watti Buchan, Rock Hard No. 191

For this reason, there were differences with the record company and multiple changes of recording studio . In the band's opinion, the result should sound more like the band's early tracks, e.g. B. the song "Never Sell Out" should convey the feeling of the 1980s.

Content

The lyrics of the songs are predominantly left-wing politically. "Lie To Me" is about the rulers lying to those they rule, "Holiday In The Sun" criticizes the death camps in Kosovo . Buchan processed personal content in “Why Are You Doing This To Me” (about a former girlfriend) and “Fucking Liar” (about his current girlfriend at the time). In "I Never Changed" Buchan tells how he sees himself. The theme song "Fuck the System" is intended to express that no one should allow those in power to dictate how to live.

The female voice that says “Pick up the phone, shithead” in “There Is No Point” was Buchan's girlfriend at the time. It was a message she'd left on Buchan's answering machine.

Reviews

The album received mostly good and very good reviews. The Rock Hard notes that meanwhile songs can also be heard in a medium tempo and awards 10/10 points. The online magazine whiskey-soda.de characterizes the album as “upper class punk” and “brutally simple and yet so ingenious”. In the opinion of metal.de , the album is not a milestone, but the band has remained true to itself and offers "the most violent punk rock on a high level of aggression" with unmistakable influences from heavy metal . Adam Bregman from Allmusic describes the album as a lesson for the new generation of punk bands like blink-182 or The Offspring and awards four out of five stars. The album also received four out of five points at laut.de.
