The Fuggerei is a two-story half - timbered house on Münsterplatz in the old town of Schwäbisch Gmünd .

history

The origins of the building go back to the 13th century, the current dimensions were reached in the 14th century. From 1601 to 1616 the house was owned by the Fuggers . Anton Fugger (1552–1616), a son of Georg (1518–1569) and grandson of Raymund Fugger , bought the house after his release from prison. He was later buried in the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster .

In 1636 the house is said to have served as quarters for Emperor Ferdinand . From 1692 the house name was first recorded as Fukkerey . After the Thirty Years' War the house served as an arms factory, a house for fallen girls and an orphanage . From 1823 the Fuggerei was converted into a prison and served as a prison for the Gmünd District Court and later the Gmünd District Court .

In the Third Reich , the Fuggerei was used by the organization Kraft durch Freude . After the war it was used as a residential and warehouse for various companies and the city administration.

In the 1970s, a new usage concept was sought. After the renovation in 1979/1980 the restaurant Zur Fuggerei opened . Most of the Fuggerei burned down in 1985, but was immediately rebuilt and reopened in 1986. The Fuggerei has been used as a restaurant ever since.

In the Preacher's museum there is a bust from the 14th century, presumably of St. Elisabeth. This comes from the Fuggerei, but it was originally probably transferred from the Gmünder Münster to the Fuggerei.
