history

The building history of the Fuhrmannhaus can be documented up to the 17th century by a stair railing from 1687. This railing is part of the reconstruction after the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683. At the location of the house, however, there are also indications of a Roman watchtower and a medieval settlement, with today's Linzer Strasse (formerly Poststrasse ) as an important transport link to Linz since the 12th century applies. Furthermore, a barred window in the inner courtyard of the Fuhrmannhaus dates back to before 1500. In the building there is a small, art-historically remarkable hall with frescoes from the late 17th century. Nowadays this hall is used for cultural events such as classical concerts and readings. A traditional Viennese wine tavern is also located in the Fuhrmannhaus. Handicraft exhibitions, farmers' markets, Easter and Christmas markets are held in the courtyard.

In the course of its more than three hundred year history, the Fuhrmannhaus changed hands several times. It was acquired by the Barnabites around 1680 and used as a farmyard and summer quarters for monastery members for over a hundred years. In 1840 Franz Xaver Fuhrmann bought the property and ran a wagon company there for several decades . Since then, it has remained in the possession of the heirs of the Fuhrmann family and thus received its current name.
