Fuji Gotemba Jōryūsho

Fuji Gotemba Jōryūsho ( Japanese 富士 御 殿 場 蒸 溜 所 , German “Fuji Gotemba Distillery”) is a Japanese whiskey distillery . It is located in the city of Gotemba at 620 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount Fuji and belongs to the Japanese Kirin group.

Fuji Gotemba was founded in the midst of the Japanese whiskey boom in the 1970s as a cooperation between Kirin, Seagram , Four Roses and Chivas Regal . This makes it the only Japanese distillery that at least temporarily had a foreign owner.

The corporations chose the location because it seemed to them climatically similar to Scotland. Kirin has been running the distillery alone since 2002. The plant can produce up to twelve million liters of whiskey a year and has its own bottling plant and cooperage .

The system has four stills and three different systems for continuous distillation . The stills are used to produce the single malt. In their shape they are similar to the stills in Strathisla , Scotland - this distillery was part of Seagrams' co-owner when Fuji Gotemba was founded. In the other plants, various grain whiskeys are produced, from which the distillery produces its blends. The distillery uses underground water from Mount Fuji for the fire. The plant uses four different types of malt , some of which are peated to different degrees, and follows the Japanese tradition of allowing fermentation to take place at cool temperatures over a longer period of time. The whiskeys are stored in five warehouses near the distillery in American oak barrels. Due to the altitude there is an average temperature of only 13 degrees and often fog.

The whiskeys that are made at Fuji Gotemba are the single malt whiskey :
