Fukazawa Sakuichi ( Japanese 深 沢 索 一 ; * September 4, 1896 in Niigata Prefecture ; † January 12, 1947 ) was a Japanese woodcut artist of the Sōsaku-hanga style.

life and work

Fukazawa was born in Niigata Prefecture, but his parents moved to Tokyo shortly afterwards. There he attended the "Central Trading School Tokyo" ( 京都 中央 商業 学校 , Tōkyō chūō shōgyō gakkō ). From around 1918 he began to occupy himself with the woodcut, supported by the graphic artist Suawa Kanenori (1897–1932). From 1922 he began to show at the exhibitions of the "Society for Creative Woodcut" ( 日本 創作 版画 協会 , Sōsaku hanga kyōkai ). In addition, he created photo contributions to magazines such as Minato ( ) and its successor Kaze ( ).

In 1931 Fukazawa was one of the founding members of the "Japanese Woodcut Association" ( 日本 版画 協会 , Nihon hanga kyōkai ). With Hiratsuka Un'ichi , Azechi Umetarō , Munakata Shikō and others he worked for the magazine Han ( ) and with 13 prints on the "100 new views of Tokyo" ( 新 東京 百 景 , Shin Tōkyō hyakkei ). - In 1936 he took part in the art competition on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Berlin with the works “Wrestling” and “Attacking”. However, his contributions were not awarded.

From 1924 he had designed woodcuts for book covers in the western style, he remained active until his untimely death.
