Fulbert (* around 950 in Italy or France , probably in Aquitaine or in the diocese of Laudun, today Laon ; † April 10, 1028 or 1029 in Chartres ) was bishop in Chartres from 1006 to 1028 . He was a student of Gerbert von Aurillac in Reims .

The construction of the Romanesque cathedral goes back to Bishop Fulbert (construction began in 1020), which is still preserved as today's lower church. During his tenure, the cathedral school also developed into a leading intellectual center north of the Alps. The heyday of the so-called " School of Chartres " lasted 200 years before other centers such as Paris (founding of the Sorbonne ) gained importance.

In 2006 the French government organized the “Célébration nationale du Millénaire de Fulbert, Chartres 1006-2006” in honor of Fulbert. The highlight of the festivities was the inauguration of the renovated Fulbert lower church on September 8, 2006 and the subsequent premiere of the Marian oratorio Stella Maris by Helge Burggrabe under the patronage of the ambassadors of France and Germany.
