Prince Fulco Ruffo di Calabria (born August 12, 1884 in Naples , † August 23, 1946 in Ronchi di Apuania near Massa-Carrara ) was one of the most successful Italian fighter pilots of the First World War with 20 confirmed kills .

Life

He was a member of the 91ª Squadriglia led by Francesco Baracca . This hunting squadron can be considered an elite unit; her included Pier Ruggiero Piccio (24 kills), Ferruccio Ranza (17), Luigi Olivari (12), Gastone Novelli (8), Cesare Magistrini, Bortolo Costantini, Giuliano Parvis and Guido Nardini (6 each).

Ruffo di Calabria, who was a cavalry officer before his time as a pilot, retired from active service in 1925 and took care of a family business. He later became the head of a Belgian-Italian company for which he had worked in Africa before the war. The family has close ties to Belgium to this day : King Albert II is married to Fulco's youngest daughter Paola Ruffo di Calabria .
