The Fulda Marathon is a half marathon that is held annually at the beginning of September in the East Hessian baroque and episcopal city of Fulda . Until 2006, the event also included a marathon .
history
The origins of the Fulda Marathon go back to the 1970s. In 1977 and 1978 the first Fulda marathons and cavalry half marathons took place. The organizers were the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment ( 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment ) of the US Army and the American military community, stationed in Fulda until 1994 .
The cavalry half marathon was run by teams of at least 15 and at most 25 runners. The team had to run the entire route in formation of two and the team captain had to carry a team pennant. At least 15 runners had to finish the race.
The cavalry half marathon soon became the largest military sporting event in Europe. Only in the last few years did the fascination of this running event spread to the regional and national running scene. For many runners, the Fulda Marathon became the central running event in the running calendar.
On August 29, 1993, the Fulda Marathon took place for the last time under the direction of the Americans. At the start were 1260 marathon runners, 792 half marathon runners and 32 teams for the team run, including two men's teams and one women's team from the LG Fulda running club.
With the withdrawal of the American troops from Fulda, the end of the Fulda Marathon seemed sealed. In an exemplary initiative, however, the Fulda running club decided to continue the tradition of the Fulda Marathon. The team run in particular should be retained in its uniqueness. A small team of five runners from the running club took care of the organization.
In 1994 the first Fulda Marathon took place under the direction of Lauftreff Fulda. From 1979 up to and including 2006, the Fulda Marathon was held over both the classic and the half distance, while from 2006 the longest route is the half marathon.
Competitions
The Fulda Marathon includes the following competitions (as of 2015):
- Half marathon singles (men, women)
- Half marathon team (men, women)
- 10 km run
- Mini-marathon secondary schools (5 km)
- Mini-marathon primary schools (2.5 km)
Routing
The route is a DLV-measured course for the half marathon and the 10-km route. The route leads through the baroque city center of Fulda and along the Fulda floodplains to the turning point in the Glaszell district. With an altitude of approx. 32 meters, the route is quite flat and leads over roads and paved paths.
The start and finish are in the stadium of the city of Fulda. Along the lower town, the route leads past the cathedral through the city center into the castle garden and below the Frauenberg on the landscape loop to Gläserzell to the turning point. On the way back along the Fulda via Maberzell, the route again leads through the historic old town and then after circling the two ponds to the finish in the stadium of the city of Fulda.
Since the start and finish are opposite the main grandstand in the HLV-awarded stadium of the city of Fulda, not only do the runners come across an outstanding backdrop, but the spectators also have many opportunities to cheer on the athletes accordingly. Especially in the area of the city palace, which the runners pass several times, there is loud support here.
Since 2013, the range of routes has been supplemented by the DLV-measured 10-km route, which largely takes place on the half marathon course.
