Ybekal Daniel Berye (* 1988 in Assela ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner .

Life

Ybekal Daniel Berye was born in Assela in 1988 and fled for political reasons from Ethiopia to Germany in 2010 , where he initially lived in a home for asylum seekers in Kirchheim . Berye lives in Kassel and starts for the local PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel club under the former national marathon trainer Winfried Aufenanger , who became aware of him when he won the Fulda Marathon and Bad Hersfeld Lollslauf .

In the same year (2011), Ybekal Daniel Berye impressed for the Recreational Sport Kirchheim eV starting the Frankfurt Marathon with a time of 2:18:26 h . 2014 he won at the German championships in the marathon in a time of 2:24:04 h the bronze medal behind Tobias Schreindl ( 2:21:47 h ) and Dominik Fabianowski ( 2:23:16 h ).

Ybekal Daniel Berye is a member of the opposition party EPPF (Patriotic Front of the Ethiopian Peoples / Ethiopian Peoples' Patriotic Front) , a member of the Executive Committee and, as chairman in Hesse, is responsible for the public relations work of the Ethiopian party in exile. In 2015, Zuniel Kim shot the short documentary "Der Langstreckenläufer" about Ybekal Daniel Berye; the film won the Golden Hercules Prize at the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival .

In 2017 Berye won the Hessian Cross Championship in Trebur over 7000 meters just ahead of Tilahun Babsa and Solomon Merne Eshete (both Ethiopia), as well as the team championship together with Thomas Schönemann and Nikolaj Dorka. Also in 2017, as one of five athletes in the leading group, he was affected by the misdirection at kilometer 19 and the resulting disqualification at the Kassel Marathon .

In September 2018 Berye won the Hessian half marathon championships, integrated into the Kassel marathon, ahead of his club colleague Jens Nerkamp . The 31-year-old Ethiopian started the Weimar city run over eleven kilometers for the young team “Sächsischer Hof Weimar” and won against the multiple city run winner Marcel Bräutigam .
