The Fulham Railway Bridge is a railway bridge over the River Thames in London . The District Line of the London Underground runs over the wrought-iron bridge . Immediately to the north of this is Putney Bridge station, and East Putney station about seven hundred meters south .
From May 1, 1880, the District Line extended to what would later become the northern bridgehead. At that time, passengers could take a short walk to a landing stage from which excursion boats sailed on the Thames. In 1886 Parliament passed a law allowing the London and South Western Railway (L & SWR) to extend the line from Putney Bridge Station to Wimbledon . The L & SWR opened the bridge together with the line on June 3, 1889 and immediately leased it to the District Line. Today it is owned by the railway infrastructure company Network Rail .
The 230 meter long structure consists of a five-field lattice girder that rests on cast iron pillars. The carrier has a characteristic turquoise color. The clearance between the pillars is 43.6 meters.
