In 2009 the ship belonged to a Hong Kong subsidiary of COSCO , it was registered in Panama and was manned by 23 people. The Full City ran aground on July 31, 2009 in bad weather about 100 nautical miles south of Oslo , near Langesund , and suffered severe soil damage. Some of the 1,100 tons of fuel on board were released and spread over more than 100 km of coastline. It posed a threat to fauna and tourism . By August 5, 2009, 212 tons of oil emulsion had been collected. The British newspaper The Independent spoke of "one of Norway's greatest disasters". The cleaning operation cost 250 million Norwegian kroner. The nature of the affected area has recovered exceptionally well after the oil spill .

At the beginning of May 2011, pirates captured the Full City in the Indian Ocean, about 450 nautical miles from Mumbai. The ship was freed by official forces only a short time later.
