The Fullerton Hotel is a hotel in Singapore and is located at the mouth of the Singapore River in Marina Bay . As part of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city in 1919, the idea for the building, which was built between 1924 and 1928 and has only served its current purpose as a hotel since 2001, was born. It is named after the first governor of Britain's Straits Settlements , Sir Robert Fullerton .

history

On the site of the current building, Fort Fullerton was built in 1829 , named after the then incumbent governor (1826-1830) Robert Fullerton, to defend the city on the river. Over the years the fort was expanded several times and in 1843 also led to the destruction of a rock on which ancient inscriptions could be read ( Singapore stone ). In 1859 it was already three times its original size.

In June 1872 the government of the Straits Settlements (now a British Crown Colony ) questioned the usefulness of forts in general. This led to the demolition of Fort Fullertons, which was completed in June 1873. It gave way to the General Post Office, opened in 1874, and the Exchange Building , completed in 1879 , which housed the Singapore Chamber of Commerce and the Singapore Club .

After Southeast Asia was largely spared from the First World War (1914-1918), the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Singapore took place in 1919. In this context, the idea for a “monument that is appropriate to the city” (Sir Laurence Guillemard , governor from 1920) was born, which should reflect the new wealth and importance of Singapore. The London architect Major P. Hubert Keys, commissioned with the design, presented his concept, which was inspired by classical Greek architecture, in Singapore in 1920. After years of controversy about the project's cost and extravagance, the foundation stone was finally laid in 1924.

On June 27, 1928, the Fullerton Building was opened by Governor Sir Hugh Clifford , who once again referred to Robert Fullerton when naming it. The cost was 4.75 million Singapore dollars . The post office - like the Chamber of Commerce and the Singapore Club - found its new, old home here and moved to the ground floor and basement of the building a few weeks after it opened. Government offices were also located in the Fullerton Building.

During the Second World War , it was used as a hospital and refuge for Allied soldiers in the last days before the fall of Singapore. The Japanese then used it as a military base .

The first major renovations took place between 1982 and 1985. The great transformation began towards the end of the 20th century, however, and in 1996 the building and surrounding land were put to tender and acquired by Sino Land for 110 million Singapore dollars. The previous tenants such as the post office had meanwhile left the building, so that construction work could begin in 1997. The company invested another 290 million Singapore dollars to convert the listed building into a 5-star hotel with 400 rooms. This started operations on December 20, 2000 and was officially opened on January 1, 2001.

On December 7, 2015, the building was named a National Monument .

Extensions

On December 14, 1958, a lighthouse was erected on the roof of the Fullerton Building to direct ship traffic. On December 30, 1979, it was removed again because the newly built high-rise blocks blocked the view.

On September 15, 1972, the Merlion statue was first erected near the site of the Singapore stone (north of the building, near Anderson Bridge ). After the construction of the Esplanade Bridge in 1997, the view was now restricted and in April 2002 the move to its current location, Merlion Park, which is east of the hotel on Marina Bay.

The hotel complex also includes the Fullerton Bay Hotel, which was built in 2010 and has 100 additional rooms and is located about 200 m to the south, as well as the Waterboat House, which was built in 1940 and is immediately adjacent to the northeast and now serves as a restaurant. The restaurants and entertainment locations Customs House , Clifford Peer , The Fullerton Pavilion and One Fullerton are also located along the shore (from south to north) .
