Fulvio Melia

Fulvio Melia (born August 2, 1956 in Gorizia ) is an Italian astronomer and astrophysicist.

Melia studied at the University of Melbourne and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he did his PhD with Paul Joss and Saul Rappaport , and after post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago was Assistant Professor at Northwestern University from 1987 . In 1991 he became Associate Professor and in 1993 Professor at the University of Arizona .

From 1996 to 2002 he was editor of the Astrophysical Journal and later Associate Editor of Astrophysical Journal Letters.

In 2000, together with Eric Agol and Heino Falcke , he proposed the possibility of observing the event horizon of the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way (Sagittarius A *) with interconnected radio telescopes (VLBI at submillimeter wavelengths). The implementation is aimed at in the Event Horizon Telescope .

He has published books on astrophysics and black holes, both textbooks and popular science books, and he also gives popular science lectures, for example in observatories and museums.

He also deals with cosmology and developed his own model of the cosmos. In this model there is no horizon problem and thus, according to Melia, no need for inflation.

In 2002 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He received the Presidential Young Investigator Award and was a Sloan Research Fellow .
