Funcrusher Plus is the debut album by the US hip-hop group Company Flow . It was released on July 28, 1997 on the Rawkus Records label .

history

Funcrusher Plus is an extension of the Funcrusher EP released in 1996 via Official Recordings . Seven of the eight tracks on the EP can also be found on the album. 8 Steps to Perfection , Blind and Infokill were released as singles, but this is not on the album. The album is considered the first underground hip-hop album, as it has a completely new, previously unknown sound. Due to the great popularity of the album in the New York underground, Rawkus Records developed into the first and, for a long time, largest underground hip-hop label in the USA. Shortly after the album was released Bigg Jus left the group and the follow-up album Little Johnny from the Hospitul: Breaks & Instrumentals Vol. 1 was released in 1999 without him. In 2000, member El-P founded his own label Definitive Jux (then Def Jux), through which a revised version of Funcrusher Plus was released in 2009 .

reception

Because of the new, edgy, minimalist sound and the complex lyrics about hip-hop traditions, battle rap and conspiracy theories, the album is seen as the cornerstone of underground rap. Then as now, it was received positively by fans and critics alike and was chosen as a classic. Allmusic awarded it a maximum of five stars and the album was included in Pitchfork Media's list of the 100's best albums of the 1990s .
