Funeral is a melodic death doom band from Norway . Thematically, the lyrics deal with loneliness, grief and fate.

history

In 1993 the band recorded their first demo Tristesse , which was released as a mini CD in 1994 by the American label Wild Rags Records . At that time, the band still assigned themselves stylistically to Funeral Doom , which, according to their own statements , earned them the title “the most depressing band in the world” through this demo . After receiving this award, Funeral decided to incorporate more symphonic elements into their music, which can be heard on their demo Beyond All Sunsets .

In 1994, the singer Toril Snyen joined the band, making them one of the first doom metal bands with a female singing voice. In 1995 her album Tragedies was released on the Arctic Serenades label. In the same year the band separated again from Toril Snyen.

The following year the group went to England to record ten songs without a vocals at the Academy Studios and worked with bands such as My Dying Bride , Anathema and Cradle of Filth . The band then got Sarah Eick as a singer and completed half of the tracks they recorded in the studio. The end result was a 1997 demo with five tracks, of which only a few copies exist, which have been sent to record labels, radio stations and reputable magazines around the world. This demo is also known as To Mourn Is a Virtue .

Then the group separated from their singer, but a replacement was quickly found in Hanne Hukkelberg . Funeral recorded another demo in 1999, and again few copies of it have been sent to record labels, radio stations and magazines. This demo became known as The Passion Play .

In 2002 they released their album In Fields of Pestilent Grief on the Italian record label Nocturnal Music.

Einar Andre Fredriksen, who was also responsible for the songwriting of the band alongside his work as a bass player, committed on 10 January 2003 suicide . As a result, the band was about to break up and was on hold for a year and a half. In the meantime, some of the band members acted as traps and set Fredriksen's poems to music. 2005 began with a new lineup with the recordings for the album From these Wounds .

In April 2006 the album Tragedies was remastered together with the demo Tristesse and re-released on the Finnish label Firebox Records as a double CD together with three bonus tracks from the recording sessions for Beyond All Sunsets .

On October 28, 2006, six weeks before the album From These Wounds was released , funeral guitarist Christian Loos was found dead in his apartment. Mats Lerberg took his place as guitarist.

In 2007 guitarist Kjetil Ottersen left the band and was replaced by Erlend Nybø.

In 2008 the group separated from their label Tabu Records and began work on their new album As the Light Does the Shadow , which was released on Indie Records in late September of the same year .

On April 26, 2010 Sindre Nedland was announced as the new singer, as well as the break with Indie Records. The new bassist Rune Gandrud was introduced on December 7, 2011. The album To Mourn Is a Virtue , the songs of which are largely based on unreleased demos, was released on May 24, 2011 on the Russian label Solitude Productions .

In February 2012, a new album entitled Oratorio was announced on the band's website , and the album was released through Grau Records at the end of November that year .
