Funk'n'Lata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Funk'n'Lata (about: 'Funk und Blech') is a Brazilian music group .

Funk'n'Lata was founded by Ivo Meirelles , who began his career as a member of the most traditional samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueira in Rio de Janeiro and was considered a great talent as a percussionist and composer.

When Meirelles began to mix the traditional rhythms of samba with funk , rap and hip-hop with young people from the favelas , he came into conflict with the club management in 1995, was excluded and founded Funk'n'Lata. The group consists of drummers and brass players, plus rap singing. A hallmark of the band are the white-bleached hairstyles of the band members. Quotes from James Brown ('Make it Funky!', In: Baile funk ao vivo ) or Queen are also interspersed with the Portuguese texts , as interludes and requests to the audience.

Despite the international success, Meirelles continues to live in the same poor district. One of his goals is to give young people a perspective away from crime and drugs. In 1999 he founded his own label Do Morro Produções , with which he promotes up-and-coming bands.

The group was introduced in 2002 with live performances and interviews in the musical documentary Moro No Brasil by Mika Kaurismäki .
