Drying plant (1957)

Food drying is the artificial drying of feed in agriculture. Cuttings (often grass or maize) are dried in drying ovens and then fed directly to feed or pressed into pellets or bales . In contrast to ensiling , the feed is not preserved through fermentation.

technology

Drum dryers and belt dryers are used to dry the cuttings. Some systems use a two-stage process in which both variants are combined. The clippings are delivered by the farmer and then fed to the dryer via the feeding device. To accelerate the drying process, an upstream chopper can first shred the clippings. The required heat can be generated by various methods. In most cases, heating oil or natural gas is used. After drying, the clippings are separated and processed into the desired end product (bulk material, pellets, bales).

The drying systems are mostly designed as independent buildings and are often operated by cooperatives of the surrounding farmers . In Switzerland, the 31 drying companies are organized in the Association of Swiss Drying Companies.
