The Japanese shipbuilding company IHI's Future 42 bulk carrier was built in a series of eight units.
details
The Future 42 series was designed by IHI on the basis of the existing Future 32A type and built for several shipping companies from 1996 to 1998 at the Group's own shipyard in Tokyo, before it was replaced by the enlarged Future 48 type .
In the construction about 24 million US dollars expensive ships are as Handymax - bulk carriers with aft mounted constructions designed. They have five holds , each with their own hatch, the hatch covers of which are hydraulically operated. Four hydraulic ship cranes mounted amidships are available for cargo handling . The total load space volume is 53,853 m³ for bulk goods and 52,379 m³ for bale space. This type of ship can transport almost 43,000 tons with a maximum draft of 11.35 m. The units are designed for the transport of various bulk goods , such as grain, coal, minerals, including various dangerous goods. The tank roof of the cargo hold is reinforced for the transport of ore. In addition, bagged goods, steel profiles, tubes and other bulk cargo can be transported, but no deck loads.
The ships are powered by a two - stroke diesel engine . The engine enables a speed of around 14.5 knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator are available.
A ship of the series, the Benita , ran aground on June 17, 2016 on a ballast voyage from India to South Africa near Mahébourg , Mauritius , after there had been a dispute on board. First, the bunker stocks were pumped up and temporary repairs carried out, then the ship was dismantled on July 23. Due to the great damage, the Benita was sold for scrapping. The bulk carrier finally sank at the end of July 2016 about 93.5 nautical miles off Mauritius in tow to the scrapping yard in Alang.
