The fyansford cement works railway was a narrow gauge - factory railway near Geelong in Australia . It was built by the Australian Portland Cement Company to move limestone from their quarry to their cement factory at Fyansford .

The railway surprisingly has a 1.3 km long tunnel, i. H. the longest rail tunnel in Victoria , neglecting the underground sections of the City Loop in Melbourne . There was a fleet of eleven steam locomotives and one diesel locomotive, the majority of which have been preserved in museum railways , particularly the Bellarine Railway .

history

The railway line was built in 1926 to replace an older cable car. The line had two sections: one from the engine shed to an older quarry and a longer section through the tunnel to the new quarry. The length of the main line from the new quarry to the engine shed was 5.6 km. The track gauge (railway) was 1,067 mm (3 feet 6 inches ), which is unusual in Victoria because most of the railways there were in broad gauge at 1,600 mm (5 feet 3 inches).

The railway was in operation until 1966, when it was replaced by elevated conveyor belts from a new stone crusher in the quarry to the cement factory. At the time of the shutdown, the fleet consisted of six steam locomotives that were given away to railway maintenance associations and one diesel locomotive that was sold to Victorian Railways .

Locomotives

Of the original 12 locomotives, seven are still preserved today. After the Australian Standard Garratt was given to the Bellarine Railway in May 2013 by the Australian Railway Historical Society Museum in Queenscliff in May 2013, all six steam locomotives that were still in operation at the time of decommissioning are now operational on the Bellarine Railway.
