Gérard Bellenger (* in the 16th century in Castellane ; † January 12, 1596 in Paris ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman and appointed, but not consecrated, bishop.

Life

Gérard Bellenger (also: Bellanger ), whose year of birth is unknown, was a doctor of law and from 1571 to 1574 diocesan administrator of the diocese of Aix-en-Provence . He represented the diocese at the meetings of the entire French clergy in Melun (1579–1580) and Paris (1585–1586) and was elected general representative of the French clergy ( Agent général du clergé ) at court in 1588 . Pope Clement VIII appointed him Bishop of Fréjus on December 2, 1592 . But since the political situation changed in 1593 in favor of the later King Heinrich IV and Bellenger was still in opposition to Heinrich, he was banished from his diocese, was never able to fill the office of bishop and was not consecrated. He died in 1596 at another clergy meeting in Paris. Barthélemy Camelin did not become Bishop of Fréjus until 1599 .
