Göppelkreuz Chapel

The Göppelkreuz Chapel , also known as the Göpelkreuz Chapel , is a small sacral building in the 10th district of  Vienna, Favoriten . It stands at Ludwig-von-Höhnel-Gasse  17-19 in front of the Laaerberg Neulandschule .

History and description of the building

This wayside shrine was erected in 1693 as a votive pillar in gratitude for saving master miller Johann Georg Göppel from a lightning strike. The servant and the horses were killed and the straw-laden wagon burned out.

The chapel was moved from its original location at Laaer-Berg-Straße 172 to its current location in 1932 due to the construction of community buildings and rebuilt there.

The Göppelkreuz chapel is a brick wayside shrine with a square floor plan and an iron grille in front of the round niche opening, the four-sided pointed roof carries a two-armed cross. Above the niche you can read the inscription: Maria knocks on your heart too . Inside there is a white statue of the Virgin Mary , a copy of the statue of Our Lady of Fátima . The sculpture "Farewell Christ from Mary" that used to be in it is now in the parish church of the Holy Cross on Laaer Berg .
