Gothenburg Cathedral

The Gothenburg Cathedral ( Swedish : Göteborgs domkyrka or Gustavi domkyrka ) is located in the center of the Swedish city of Gothenburg . It is the third cathedral in the same place. The first was inaugurated in 1633 in honor of King Gustav II Adolf , who had died a year earlier in the battle of Lützen . It is the episcopal church of the Diocese of Gothenburg .

Building and cathedral forecourt

The first two churches fell victim to city fires in 1721 and 1802. After the last fire, the architect Carl Willhelm Carlberg was commissioned to design a new cathedral. Work on the cathedral began in 1804. The foundations of the old church could be used, but not all parts of the current cathedral correspond to the old floor plan. Since Carl Wilhelm Carlberg died a year before the inauguration, the building was completed by his student Justus F. Weinberg. When it was inaugurated on May 21, 1815 by Bishop Johan Wingård, the cathedral was not yet finished, the church tower was missing . This was inaugurated in 1825, but the last construction work on the tower continued for another two years.

The cathedral was restored several times, in 1904, 1954 to 1957, 1983 to 1985 and 2013 to 2015. The most recent renovations primarily served to improve the accessibility and the external appearance of the building. In addition, modern work rooms for social welfare and musicians were created in the tower of the cathedral. The sacristy is now in the north chapel, and there is a "children's cathedral" in the south transept. The neo-classical style of the interior was reinforced during the renovations. The half-columns of the choir are made of wood, but marbled, so that the viewer has the impression that they are stone columns.

The cathedral forecourt was used as a cemetery until the end of the 18th century. There is now a park around the church. On the Domplatz there is a bust of the former cathedral provost Peter Wieselgren , who was a committed advocate against alcohol and advocated that the poor could also attend the service. In his time it was customary to rent a pew to go to church.

In front of the cathedral, on Västra Hamngatan, is the cathedral fountain. It is one of the oldest drinking water fountains in the city and still has water today, from which passers-by are invited to drink.

inventory

Four church bells hang in the tower, which together with the clockwork weigh 15.5 tons, more than any other church tower in Sweden. The Sunday bell dates from 1815 and has an inscription by Johan Olov Wallin on it. The inscription begins with the words: “Come into a room where the Lord is worshiped. He is holy, he is the gate of heaven. "

The inventory includes two church candlesticks from 1683. The church silver dates from the 17th century and is still in use today. It consists of a box for wafers, a goblet and the baptismal font that survived the fires. The other inventory includes a bishop's cloak from 1751 made of French brocade silk, which King Adolf Friedrich commissioned on the occasion of his coronation. In addition, there are some older vestments in the cathedral, including two from 1790, which are made of red velvet with gold embroidery.
