Günter Horn (born August 18, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German painter and graphic artist . He has been married to the theater and film actress Karin Ugowski since 1993 and lives and works in his studio in the Kunsthof in Grammentin . Günter Horn has two grown daughters from a previous marriage.

Artistic work

Günter Horn completed an apprenticeship as a shipbuilder from 1950 to 1953 before starting work as a blacksmith , decorator and advertising painter in 1953 .

From 1961 he was a theater painter and set designer at various Berlin theaters, such as B. at the Maxim Gorki Theater and the Berliner Volksbühne . At the Volksbühne in Berlin he was responsible, among other things, for the set design of Helmut Straßburger's renowned production of Diderot's " Rameau's Neffe ". With over 296 performances, this production was one of the most successful Volksbühne productions of all time, with national and international guest performances. At the same time, Günter Horn began to develop himself as a painter and graphic artist.

From 1965 to 1967 he was sponsored by the well-known painter and graphic artist Otto Nagel and is now considered to be his last living student. Günter Horn has been a freelance painter and graphic artist since 1969.

His artistic work is often divided into two phases. In the period from 1969 to 1985 he created many oil paintings and lithographs based on his hometown Berlin. Here are the houses with the frameless black windows and the Berlin firewalls probably the most famous motifs that appeared repeatedly in his oil paintings, etchings and lithographs. They probably symbolize the urban anonymity and the effect of the former Berlin, often described as cold and gray, with the partly still heavily destroyed old buildings from the Second World War in East Berlin . These pictures were also shown in exhibitions in Iraq , Lisbon , Moscow and Tokyo .

After moving to the country in 1985, he began his second creative phase, in which he captured the gloomy, sad-looking and fairytale (quote) landscapes of Mecklenburg in his pictures.

In 1971 Günter Horn was appointed a member of the Association of Visual Artists (VBK for short) , which he was critical of until its dissolution in 1990. He has been a member of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Artists' Association since 1990 and, together with his wife Karin Ugowski, campaigns for the cultural promotion of the region. In 2002 he received the Demmin District Culture Prize for this.

Murals and ceiling paintings by Horn can also be seen in various regions of Germany. Calendars and art books contain works from both of his creative phases, and many German actors have pictures in their possession. From 1990 to 2003 Horn and his wife organized the annual art courtyard in Grammentin, the "Galerie das Höft", a summer meeting point for artists, exhibitors, art lovers and tourists from all over the world.
