The Neubrandenburg art collection is one of four art museums in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
history
In 1982, after its predecessor, the Städtische Kunstsammlung im Palais Neubrandenburg , had disappeared since 1945, it was re-established as a municipal institution and was given a provisional residence in the half-timbered villa Am Pferdemarkt 1, which was intended for only five years exclusively artistic criteria, which now contains around 6,000 works of art of painting , graphics and sculpture .
With an open day on April 13, 2003, the Neubrandenburg Art Collection opened its new domicile at Grosse Wollweberstrasse 24. In two years of construction, a striking half-timbered building from the 18th century was renovated in the center of the city and expanded into a museum complex with a modern extension . Two different exhibition areas have now been established on 400 m² of exhibition space, on the one hand presenting special exhibitions and on the other, and this is new, showing existing exhibitions over a longer period of time. This gives the museum the opportunity to organize the collection in different contexts, to clarify lines of development and, above all, to make them transparent for visitors.
Since November 24, 2018, the exhibition Das Brandzimmer has been a reminder of the municipal collection before 1945. On view are partially assembled fragments of the porcelain collection that were found during archaeological investigations prior to construction work. The exhibition is a room installation by the artist Simon Schubert .
The widow of the former head of the collection, Walter Günteritz, bequeathed her fortune to the newly established Mertens Günteritz Foundation , whose purpose is to support the Neubrandenburg art collection.
